The last few days at school we’ve been talking books at lunch time. It is so exciting to find people who love books. You get a chance to learn of new authors. If you’re an avid reader, you can run out of books by your favorite author and if you know kindred spirits, they can help you find a new author or two or three.
I miss Borders-the big alternate bookstore that closed. Why? Because Barnes and Noble carry certain authors but Borders carried others. I loved spending time in Borders and Barnes and Noble but now I don’t have a choice. With Borders gone I wonder how those authors not carried by Barnes and Noble are doing.
I do have another choice in bookstores because 51 miles away is Powell’s–the biggest bookstore in the Northern Hemisphere and from time to time the whole world. When I go to Powell’s I read the suggestions by the staff that are right by their personal favorites. I can pick up a book and read a ittle bit of it before adding it to my stack.
Going to Powell’s is usually a group project. I either go with friends or my husband. We scatter around the store and plan meeting times throughout the trip. Often one stop is at the cafe where we can talk about the books we have picked and the ones that we are still looking for.
Unfortunately at school during class there are fewer students who have books to read when they are done with their class work than previous years. A few students will talk books with me and I often recommend David Eddings to students who are fantasy lovers. Thirteen wonderful books with a very interesting and complex world.
